Mill No.1 enjoys an important part of history along the Jones Falls, starting as a cotton mill in 1847 and in 1973 becoming the home of Life Like Products.
The Mount Vernon Company, which operated several mills in the Jones Falls Valley, became the world’s largest producer of cotton duck in the late 19th century, supplying cotton for sails, uniforms, tents and parachutes for the army.
The collection of buildings, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, dates from 1845 to 1918.

Terra Nova Ventures acquired the property that contains No. 1, and two ancillary buildings know as Picker Building and Store House. The developers have converted the complex into 90 apartments and 42,000 sq. ft. of commercial space.
Inside the walls of the old boiler room now operates as a restaurant. Cosima highlights the fresh Mediterranean cuisine of Sicily and captures the authentic essence of traditional Southern Italian flavors through its menu and unique cocktails. The smoke stack towers over the shared courtyard and keeps a wood-fired brick oven inside the open kitchen. A large open bar area and back patio create great spots for cocktail hours.

Located in the heart of Mill No. 1, the Picker Building, and event space, Heron Rm, is a unique new venue that pays tribute to its industrial heritage with its cast-iron columns, vaulted brick ceilings, foundation stones, and hand selected rough sawn pine blanks that complement the original 19th century details.
The Heron Rm will host numerous weddings, mitzvahs, corporate cocktail parties, and holiday events annually in the 2500 sq. ft space with seating for 130 comfortably, and up to 150 guests in creative seating designs.
The outdoor terrace and front railed deck that overlook the Jones Falls, and steep rock formations can accommodate an additional 50 guests and may also be tented.

We are honored at the opportunity to share the talents of Copper Kitchen, Hoopla, Corner Pantry and Cosima. We know we can count on our preferred caterers to provide the same quality product we expect from ourselves.
Use of Heron Rm’s preferred caterer list is to offer a variety of food menu and beverage choices for all clients at a few different price points.
Heron Rm event destination invites guests to explore an experience like no other in the area. Mill No. 1 causes you to forget where you are.
Enter the one-way path, follow its bend and onto the cobblestone courtyard. During your cocktail party, we invite your guests to take a stroll onto the steel bridge, and see the panoramic view of the restored Mill, courtyard and event space.
It’s often to see the yellow-crowned night Heron, who is often perched on a rock above the bubbling waters of the falls.
Heron Rm is the kind of space that evokes creativity and thinking outside the box. It’s location in the historic “town square” will be thoughtfully prepared and customized to your event.
We invite you to set up a tour to visit the space and see for yourself.
